Mieux vaut tard que jamais, le film d'animation japonais Pompo The Cinephile (2021, Takayuki Hirao, Studio CLAP) sortira enfin en France et au cinéma cette année.
Par contre le distributeur français (Art House) a fait le choix très étrange, pour le titre français, de changer le titre original en anglais pour... un autre titre anglais. Le titre français de ce film sera donc : Coming Soon.
Si ce n'est pas la première fois qu'un choix douteux de ce type est opéré (comme par exemple avec Planet Stupid), c'est en tous cas toujours aussi malheureux, surtout quand c'est si peu inspiré.
Et c'est d'autant plus inopportun que le titre original anglais (qui est aussi le titre japonais) était of course facilement traduisible en français : "Pompo la Cinéphile" (sans parler du fait que le terme cinéphile est à la base d'origine française).
A noter enfin que le personnage principal du film n'est en fait pas Pompo, et que si elle a été dégagée du titre, on ne voit en revanche plus qu'elle sur l'affiche française (spoil : le perso principal est en fait celui qu'on peut voir... en premier plan sur l'affiche originale, par exemple).
Bref, si la logique de tout ça demeure bien obscure, que ça ne vous empêche pas en tous cas d'aller voir ce chouette film lorsqu'il sortira (il n'y a pas encore de date... coming soon), en espérant que vous ne galériez pas trop sur Google en tapant "Coming Soon" ;-\
C'est peut-être ça, la "french touche".
[edit 2024] Un an à peine après avoir sorti "Coming Soon" en mai 2023 au cinéma en France (dans plus de 200 salles), le distributeur ressort Pompo en juillet 2024 (toujours au cinéma) mais cette fois sous le titre originel "Pompo The Cinephile". MDR++ la logique de tout ça. J'espère qu'ils vont pas faire bugger la base de données des visas d'exploitation ;-p

A l'issue du divertissant et sympathique (même si très classique) film d'animation de Super Mario Bros, j'ai zieuté comme souvent avec beaucoup d'attention les credits du générique de fin, et observé un remerciement spécial jusque là non relevé : un special thank à Yoichi Kotabe.
L'occasion donc de rappeller que Mr Kotabe est une légende de l'animation et du design : ancien collaborateur de Miyazaki & Takahata (Horus, Puss 'n Boots, Heidi, Panda Kopanda, Marco, Jarinko Chie ...), il a longtemps travaillé dans l'ombre chez Nintendo, pour qui il a notamment relooké le design de Mario, créé Yoshi et Wario, et collaboré à d'autres jeux célèbres comme Zelda et Pokemon.
Je lui avais consacré un reportage vidéo en 2020 dans le cadre de sa venue en Suisse pour une exposition Heidi, et j'en profite pour partager avec vous quelques photos montrant (et c'est très rare) certains de ses travaux pour Nintendo (via l'exposition la même année dont je parlais dans la même news).
Et j'ai aussi relevé un autre special thank à Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), qui a brièvement travaillé sur le film au début du projet, selon certaines sources.

Hasard (ou pas), depuis que j'ai mis en avant l'été dernier (via notamment un petit montage vidéo perso vu des millions de fois) l'existence du long métrage d'animation indien/japonais Ramayana : The Legend of Prince Rama de 1992, méconnu en occident, il semble que le film suscite l'intérêt de distributeurs et festivals étrangers.
En effet, après des projections dans les récents festivals Sitges (Espagne) et Animation is Film (USA), le film vient d'être acheté par Momo Films pour une distribution au Canada.
Affaire à suivre.

Nouvelle copieuse bande annonce pour le long métrage live Shin Kamen Rider, réalisé par Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman...).
Attention, vu que le film est déjà sorti depuis une semaine au Japon, ce trailer dévoile donc forcément pas mal de nouvelles choses (mais bon, ceux qui veulent ne pas se faire spoiler savent bien logiquement qu'il ne faut pas regarder les bande annonces en général ;-).
A noter également qu'un documentaire making-of de 80min sera diffusé dans une semaine au Japon par la NHK.

Il y a deux ans je vous parlais de l'artiste canadien Denver Jackson, qui quasiment tout seul via son petit studio Cloudrise Pictures avait déjà réalisé une mini série et un long métrage Esluna.
Et bien il continue dans le même univers avec un nouveau long métrage, toujours réalisé et animé seul, The Worlds Divide, pour lequel il vient de lancer une campagne Kickstarter afin de l'aider à payer la post production (voix, musiques et sound design).

Il est signé par Busifan, un réalisateur indé déjà responsable du film Dahufa (The Guardian), sorti nulle part ailleurs qu'en Chine et au Japon, mais que j'avais pu découvrir en 2018 au Canada via le festival Fantasia.
Ce nouveau film était attendu l'an dernier, mais est toujours en production.
Synopsis :
When poverty-stricken Daguzi encounters a child – Mantou – floating downstream at theriverbank, he decides to take him by his side as his son, with compassion and affection. Tochange their distressed situation and give Mantou a better future, Daguzi takes a risk butends up becoming a wanted criminal when his plan fails. It leads him to a homeless lifehiding around with Mantou. As their life gets harder, he considers entrusting Mantou tosomeone else. Mantou has noticed his thought deep inside. Daguzi takes Mantou to theGreat Dragon Bay, hoping to find the treasures from the mysterious black ship and tochange their desperate situation. However, he is bitten by the monster on the black shipand starts to transform into a monster slowly. Anxious Mantou has to run around and try hisbest to save his monster father. Meanwhile, because of the arrival of the black ship, all sortsof people begin to gather in the Great Dragon Bay. The history of the Bay along with storiesof the crowds gradually unfold.

Le réalisateur Masashi Kawamura m'a contacté pour me faire part de la mise en ligne du pilote de son projet Hidari (que j'avais dans mon collimateur depuis longtemps), un film de samurai en stop-motion qu'il souhaite produire en long métrage via une campagne Kickstarter, avec le soutien de plusieurs sociétés et studios japonais : Dwarf (Rilakkuma, Domo-Kun), Whatever Co, et Tecarat.
L'histoire est inspirée de la vie de Jingoro Hidari, un sculpteur japonais qui aurait vécu à l'ère d'Edo, et dont la réelle identité (voire existence) n'a jamais été confirmée. On lui attribue de nombreuses sculptures en bois, qui ont inspiré ce projet.
Mr Kawamura est quand à lui un réalisateur japonais jusque là plutôt spécialisé dans des pubs et films de commande. Il a grandi aux USA, bercé par des films comme Evil Dead, RoboCop, Jason and the Argonauts, ou Lady Snowblood. Il s'agit ici de son premier projet de long métrage.

Synopsis :
A skilled carpenter/sculptor Jingoro, gets set up by his colleagues and loses his right arm and his father in an "accident" triggered by a political conspiracy during the renovation of the Edo Castle. A few decades later … Jingoro is on the journey of revenge with his partner“ Sleeping Cat” and his weaponized prosthetic arm. People have come to call him Jingoro "Hidari," which means "lefty" in Japanese. Jingoro eventually defeats all the foes that has betrayed him, but he learns that Tokugawa Shogunate was behind the incident, and starts investigating. He searches for clues and fights with an army of mechanical soldiers along the way. Eventually he meets the mastermind behind all the crimes, but first, he must save the city of Edo by stopping the Edo Castle, now turned into a weapon of mass destruction!

Jingoro Hidari is a legendary sculptor who is said to have existed in the Edo period (17th century) of Japan. This action-packed film creatively combines fantasy with historical facts. Hidari has left behind a legacy of anecdotes and remarkable wooden sculptures, but his very existence is yet to be confirmed. Combining fantasy with historical facts, stories of this craftsman will be boldly reconstructed and told in the form of a stop-motion samurai action film. Intricate wooden puppets, reminiscent of Hidari’s own sculptures, will bring this action-packed film to life. Currently we’ve created a 5-minute pilot film, with the goal of turning it into a feature length film.
Après une première campagne crowdfunding au Japon sur la plateforme Motion Gallery, il s'agit donc ici de la deuxième campagne, cette fois internationale, sur Kickstarter, avec un objectif de 2 millions de yens (environ 14 000 euros).
