Présentation
Né le 12 septembre 1955 à Yamanashi.Débute sa carrière à la Tatsunoko comme intervalliste en 1974, devient directeur d'animation au début des années 80 sur des séries comme Gold Lightan, puis se joint en 1983 à Otomo sur son film Harmagedon, en signant le character-design.
Ses talents sont vite reconnus, et il animera sur des grands films des années 80 comme Macross Do You Remember Love, Nausicaa ou Kamui No Ken. A noter qu'il a travaillé sur l'épisode 18 des Cités d'Or.
En 1987 il débute sa carrière de réalisateur avec le sketch "Chicken Man and the Red Neck" de l'omnibus Robot Carnival. Otomo ne le lache pas et lui confie la direction de l'animation du 3ème segment de Manie Manie, ainsi que celle d'Akira en 1989. En 1995, il réalise son premier film "Catnapped", prouvant ses multiples talents (il cumule ici les postes de réalisateur, scénariste, metteur en scène, character-designer et directeur de l'animation). En 2002, il signe son plus gros projet avec le long-métrage "Palme No Ki", qui rencontra toutefois un succès moyen. En 2004, il s'attaque à la réalisation de sa première série TV, "Fantastic Children".
