Mercredi dernier dans l'émission Catsuka sur la chaîne Nolife, j'ai donc diffusé en exclusivité un court-métrage allemand de 2009 nommé Screen Test, dont seul un extrait que j'avais pointé dans cette news est disponible sur la toile.

Réalisé en 2009 par Steffen Schaeffler, ce film est en fait une sorte de pilote pour un projet de long-métrage d'animation nommé "The Emperor's New Clothes", initié par Rob Stevenhagen. Avec à ses côtés Steffen donc ainsi que sa soeur Annette Schaeffler - déjà responsables du court-métrage "The Periwig-Maker" nommé aux Oscars - ils ont eu l'idée de réaliser un petit court qui mettrait en scène le casting du personnage principal de leur projet de long. Et dans le style qu'ils souhaitent exercer, c'est à dire très Disney-ien old-chool. Ce qui n'est pas étonnant quand on lit le CV de Rob Stevenhagen, qui fût animateur et/ou storyboardeur sur des films comme Qui veut la peau de Roger Rabbit ?, Asterix, Balto, Fievel, Sinbad, El Dorado, ou même Wallace & Gromit.

English informations : Steffen Schaeffler's "Screen Test" made it's television (and internet) broadcast premiere last week during Catsuka TV program on Nolife channel. You can watch it online.

"Screen Test" is the result of the collaboration between Steffen Schaeffler, his sister Annette and Rob Stevenhagen.

After Steffen and Annette’s puppet animated short film THE PERIWIG-MAKER was nominated for an Oscar in 2001, the three started working on the 2D animated feature film THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES, a project that Rob had begun working on long before. Whilst re-developing the feature project together, they came up with the idea of making a (very) short film about the casting of the main character. And so began the work on SCREEN TEST.

The style of the short film would be the same as for the feature project, classic 2D animation, without the use of clean-ups, reminiscent of the Xerox technique used in the animated Disneyfilms from the 60s. As they only had very little funding for the film (20.000€ from a German film fund/FFA), it was mainly the three of them working on it – which resulted in the fact that it took a good four years to finish. Only when the film was finished they approached Josef Hader, a (in the German-speaking regions) famous Austrian comedian, for the voice over and were delighted when he agreed to speak the part.

Since the film was finished in 2009 it ran at several international festivals and also won a few awards.
