EVÉNEMENTS
Si vous habitez à Paris, le festival du Carrefour du Cinéma d'Animation 2023 - qui fête cette année ses 20 ans - s'ouvrira demain 22 novembre au Forum des Images et ce jusqu'au au 28 novembre (un peu plus tôt que d'habitude).
Le programme est comme toujours bien sympathique, avec pas mal de long métrages, court métrages (dont des films étudiants) et rencontres.
L'invité d'honneur est le chinois Liu Jian (Piercing, Have a Nice Day), qui viendra présenter son nouveau film Art College 1994 en cloture, ainsi que ses courts lors d'une programmation spéciale.
Le film d'ouverture étant They Shot the Piano Player de Fernando Trueba et Javier Mariscal (Chico et Rita).
Benoit Chieux, qui signe l'affiche et qui est le parrain du traditionnel cadavre exquis du festival, viendra présenter son nouveau film Sirocco et le royaume des courants d'air, et proposera aussi une masterclass.
D'autres longs seront proposés comme La Planète sauvage, Les Quatre âmes du coyotte, Léo, Pinocchio (de Del Toro), Adam change lentement, Sky dome 2123...
Un peu de "japanim" aussi avec Memories, le film de Cowboy Bebop, Souvenirs goutte à goutte, The Tunnel to Summer, ainsi que Nezumikozō Jirokichi (le nouveau court de Rintaro).
Au niveau des séances spéciales : un focus sur le studio Sacrebleu Productions, un WIP du film Epiphania par Jan Kounen, un making of de la série Samuel, le traditionnel programme Politique et animation (avec A Bear Named Wotjek ainsi que La Forêt de Mademoiselle Tang de Denis Do), et d'autres programmations proposées par Les Femmes s’animent, le FICAM...
Et deux expositions dédiées à They Shot the Piano Player et La Planète sauvage.

COURT-MÉTRAGES
Nouvelle bande annonce pour la saison 2 de Capsules, nouvelle anthologie de 13 court métrages par des artistes/studios indépendants chinois, le tout produit par Bilibili (géant de la SVOD là-bas).
Le détail des films et artistes n'a pas encore été listé, mais je vous rappelle que l'un des courts est co-réalisé par un français habitant en Chine, Nicolas Nemiri.
La bande annonce est dispo sur les internets chinois ici et là, et comme souvent, j'ai fait un petit CatsuKut / remontage vidéo court pour mes réseaux.
Début de la diffusion de la saison 2 le 5 décembre, sachant que la saison 1 avait été étonnamment proposée gratuitement - avec sous-titres anglais et en accès monde - par Bilibili de septembre à décembre 2022 (avant de réserver les courts à ses abonnés).

Le fabuleux long métrage (toujours intéressant / touchant de revoir à noël) Tokyo Godfathers du regretté Satoshi Kon revient au cinéma aux USA pour une sortie limitée du 11 au 13 décembre.
Le film fête cette année ses 20 ans, et ces projections parlent d'un nouveau master 4K mais il s'agit probablement d'un argument marketing et du même master 4K déjà sorti en Blu-Ray (avec des ressorties cinés limitées aussi) en 2020.

Bande annonce française pour Mon ami robot (Robot Dreams), long métrage d'animation espagnol co-produit avec la France, et réalisé par Pablo Berger.
La sortie en France est toujours prévue le 27 décembre 2023 via Wild Bunch.
Sachant que cette bande annonce est très exactement la même que le dernier trailer espagnol que j'avais relayé le mois dernier, en vous rappellant également qu'il s'agit d'un film muet.

Dans la foulée de ma news d'il y a 3 jours sur des projections cinés rares d'animes vintage à Noël à Tokyo, j'ai ressorti de mes bibliothèques deux ouvrages liés à certains de ces titres afin de tweeter quelques nouvelles photos #CatsuKollection.
- Une édition du roman original de "Meikyu Monogatari" (Manie Manie / Neo Tokyo) écrit par Taku Mayumura, qui contient des illustrations d'animateurs historiques ayant aussi travaillé sur l'adaptation animée : Koji Morimoto (qui signe également la couverture), Atsuko Fukushima, Takashi Nakamura et Yoshiaki Kawajiri.
- Le artbook "The Making Of Bobby's Girl" paru en 1985 est centré sur le travail de character-design du film effectué par la mangaka Akimi Yoshida, surtout connue en occident pour Banana Fish.

Après une mise en ligne éphémère opérée (par erreur) par l'école MOPA l'an dernier, le magnifique film de fin d'études La Diplomatie de l'Éclipse est enfin en ligne.
Réalisé par Clémence Bailly, Selim Lallaoui, César Luton, Axel Mechin et Achille Pasquier.

Comme je l'avais annoncé précédemment, les films de Gurren Lagann ressortent cette année au cinéma dans plusieurs pays (Japon, USA, Taiwan) à l'occasion du 15e anniversaire de la série (produite à l'époque par Gainax, et maintenant gérée par Trigger).
La sortie américaine (limitée) vient d'être officialisée, avec des projections 4K (et même 4D) du 1er film "Childhood's End" les 16/17 janvier 2024, suivies par des projos du 2e film "The Lights in the Sky Are Stars" les 23/24 janvier.
Les réservations commenceront en décembre via FathomEvents.

Le long métrage culte Ninja Scroll de Yoshiaki Kawajiri fête cette année ses 30 ans, et à cette occasion le film vient aujourd'hui d'être mis ou remis en SVOD sur une bonne dizaine des principales plateformes SVOD japonaises.

COURT-MÉTRAGES
L'animatrice et illustratrice Emmanuelle Walker signe un très beau court métrage nommé Le Jour où je me suis ramassée dans l'champ - ou OMW pour son titre anglais - qu'elle a réalisé chez WIZZ.
Un petit film très personnel qui prends place à Québec où elle a grandi, et où prennent aussi place quelques galères du quotidien.
Et j'en profite pour signaler que j'ai référencé le mois dernier sur Catsuka Shopping un joli livre jeunesse (avec des calques) qu'elle a illustré : Solidaires : L'entraide dans la nature.

This film is set in the beautiful province of Quebec where I grew up, so the original version had to be in French.
After years in the animation industry, I wanted to direct a film with no constraints. I wanted to write a story for myself. With a carte blanche and team of animators from Wizz, I seized the opportunity to write a short film. It is a film without concern of an audience, a film that I would want to watch. In reality, I never wrote a single word. This film was born from 'frames' that felt natural to illustrate and animate. It was a purely visual endeavor, a puzzle of scenes. The basic idea was simply to have a character go through a day akin to an obstacle course where troubles pile up, but at every 'pothole,' the character would get up and continue. This character, detached from each unpleasant moment, moves forward without hesitation. In hindsight, with my personal revelations and discussions with friends, I realised the subconscious symbols of my film. All of which stemmed from a storyboard-based and entirely automatic writing process. Naturally, I anticipated questions about the snake. Indeed, the image of the snake can evoke temptation and death. A snake is often associated with chaos, especially when it slithers along a woman's leg. However, as depicted in Renaissance works, it is also a symbol of rebirth and immortality. Thanks again to my team for their hard work, I’m grateful for the opportunity offered by my lovely rep Wizz.

Information peu relayée mais d'importance : une exposition - gratuite - dédiée à la mémoire de l'artiste sud coréen Kim Jung Gi a ouvert aujourd'hui au Centre Culturel Coréen (Paris).
Baptisée "Lignes infinies, au fil de l'art de Kim Jung Gi", cette expo revient sur la carrière et les différentes facettes de l'artiste, à travers des originaux, oeuvres de jeunesse, une grande fresque de 10 mètres, et diverses collaborations sur des supports aussi variés que des chaussures, des céramiques, ou le Parc des Princes.
