J'étais persuadé d'avoir déjà parlé de Pompo the Cinephile l'an dernier mais en fait non (et je crois me rappeler pourquoi, c'était le jour où Catsuka a brulé...).
Du coup je profite de l'annonce de sa sortie au cinéma aux USA (malheureusement toujours rien de prévu en France) pour pointer ce très chouette film (que j'ai vu l'an dernier) réalisé par Takayuki Hirao au studio CLAP, et où l'histoire tourne autour d'un assistant de production cinéphile qui va voir se proposer de nouvelles responsabilités ;-]

Découvrez Milky Highway, court métrage en 3D réalisé par Yohei Kameyama, encore étudiant.
Entièrement réalisé avec Blender, ce petit film témoigne pour moi d'une nouvelle mouvance d'animation indépendante japonaise que je sens émerger (après celle très 2D/Pixiv via les clips ces dernières années), et qui grâce aux logiciels 3D gratuits va générer de nouvelles propositions artistiques par rapport aux CG occidentaux (et sans doute du 3D/Pixiv donc ;-).

Joanna Quinn (59 ans) est une animatrice anglaise très connue dans les milieux festivaliers. Elle réalise depuis presque 30 ans des court métrages rigolos et plein d'énergie (au crayon de couleur) mettant le plus souvent en scène le personnage d'une anti-héroïne nommée Beryl (le studio de la réalisatrice se nommant d'ailleurs Beryl Productions International).
Cela faisait 15 ans qu'elle n'avait pas sorti de nouveau court métrage, donc je signale la mise en ligne (pour une durée limitée, pour les Oscars) de son tout nouveau film "Affairs of the Art" (L'art dans le sang), produit / scénarisé par son bras droit Les Mills, avec l'ONF.
Après une mise en ligne furtive (mais pas pour moi ;-) il y a quelques semaines pendant moins d'une demi heure sur le channel Youtube de l'ONF, le film est finalement hébergé sur le site du New Yorker (en géolocalisé pour les américains uniquement), mais la version française (Canada oblige) a été mise en ligne il y a quelques jours, accessible depuis la France, donc.

Avec la complicité du studio Eddy, je vous propose en avant première le court métrage The Rift réalisé par Olivier Lescot.
Et c'est un plaisir car Olivier est un animateur français dont j'apprécie le travail que je relaie depuis 10 ans tout rond (j'avais posté sa première bande démo en janvier 2012).
Adepte depuis plus longtemps d'animations avec mouvements de caméras très travaillés, il propose encore une fois dans ce film un vrai régal visuel avec un plan séquence de près de 2 minutes.
Il a aussi profité de ce court métrage pour y catalyser toutes ses influences, en terme de cinéma, de romans graphiques, et de productions nippones. A noter d'ailleurs que cette animation est une sorte de proof-of-concept pour un projet plus long qu'il développe.
A few words from director Olivier Lescot :
By starting with the animation of the character, we make sure the movement will be the one we want. Only when that works do we add the elements of the scenery around the main animation. These enhance the sense of 3d space in the shot by establishing references for different depths of field.
I find that the creation of volumes and the illusion of a 3d space facilitate the immersion of the spectator. This is the directing style that I like.
It's also a very smooth and simple way to create stylish camera movements. The goal is to make something vibrant and to make the viewer share the pleasure we took in making this film.
Biography Olivier Lescot :
Olivier started drawing at a young age and attended the famed Penninghen school of art and the Gobelins to study animation. 2D fluid character animation is at the heart of his work.
Olivier directed two music videos, for Breakbot (titled Another You) and Christian Rich (titled Shibuya) among other projects. These first films led him to direct successful commercials for various brands and artists, including Ariana Grande and Ubisoft.

Le réalisateur de Maurice de Bruijne (basé aux Pays-Bas, et plutôt spécialisé live action) m'a envoyé son tout premier court métrage d'animation nommé Zangkom Redux, réalisé avec une petite équipe durant la pandémie, l'histoire tournaut autour de la brève rencontre entre deux personnages isolés.
C'est très beau et très influencé par ce trop rare courant rétro à mi-chemin entre animation japonaise et Moebius, grosso modo.
Au niveau du staff je cite notamment Viktor Hachmang aux designs et Marcel Tigchelaar en lead anim.

Je partageais ce matin sur Twitter la triste nouvelle de la disparition de Manabu Ōhashi, légendaire animateur japonais que j'avais eu la chance d'inviter et rencontrer au festival Polymanga 2017 dans le cadre de la première mondiale du film Tomcat's Big Adventure (1992) qui n'était jamais sorti, même au Japon.
Mr Ohashi s'est éteint le 12 février 2022, à l'âge de 73 ans (sa mort n'ayant été annoncée que plusieurs jours plus tard, par respect premier pour ses funérailles comme cela se fait souvent au Japon).
Ce soir je lui ai consacré un thread Twitter, avec beaucoup d'extraits de ses travaux, que vous pouvez aussi retrouver ci-dessous.
Manabu Ohashi était un vétéran de l'animation japonaise, entré à la Toei dans les années 60, quelques années après Hayao Miyazaki. Il faisait partie des proches collaborateurs d'Osamu Dezaki, et était connu pour un son graphisme personnel délicat et poétique, souvent pictural.
Cela se ressentait notamment dans sa seule et unique réalisation, le court-métrage "Cloud" de Robot Carnival, qu'il avait entièrement fait seul.
Pendant plus de 50 ans, il fût animateur sur d'innombrables animes cultes, et a même pris en charge l'animation de certains openings de séries comme "L'Île au trésor" et "Space Adventure Cobra".
On le retrouve sur plus de 100 animes différents, parmi lesquels Ashita no Joe, Astroboy, Black Jack, Judo Boy, Cyborg 009, Sailor Moon, Otogi Zoshi ... Et sur des films comme Metropolis, Patema, Roujin Z, Venus Wars, Golgo 13, Harmagedon, Kamui, Manie Manie, Palme no Ki ...
Il signa souvent son travail avec le pseudo "Mao Lamdo", et était extrêmement présent sur internet depuis une dizaine d'années, notamment via son site www.maocloud.net, et son compte Twitter. Sur la fin de sa carrière, il fût aussi professeur d'animation.

Il y a un an je vous faisais découvrir le travail de l'animateur coréen Kim Kyeongbae via son clip Seoul Sori.
Aujourd'hui j'ai le plaisir de pointer les 2 premiers trailers de Amen A Man, son nouveau court-métrage qui est terminé, et qui entame sa vie en festivals (il sera mis en ligne l'an prochain).
C'est encore une fois très beau, et réalisé avec une petite équipe, le réal étant juste épaulé par Cha Jaeyi à l'animation, Ha Hyunjun aux décors, et Woo Hyelin à la couleur (+ bien sûr les gens du son).

Annonce inattendue que Shin Japan Heroes Universe, un projet groupé autour des films *Shin* du réalisateur Hideaki Anno, à savoir ses reboots de Evangelion, Godzilla, Ultraman, et Kamen Rider.
Les sociétés Toho, khara, Tsuburaya Productions, et Toei se sont ainsi réunies autour de ce *multiverse* dont les détails ne sont pas encore connus, mais si ça se trouve ça sera juste du merchandising ;-] (et encore plus fort que le hashtag #EvaMerchMultiverse que j'avais jadis lancé ;-)

CLIPS ET PUBS
L'été dernier j'exportais de Russie le très beau clip Motylki produit pour le groupe Glukoza, avec Aleksey Bovkoun à la réalisation / direction d'anim et Anna Cattish au character-design.
Et bien la même équipe propose un nouveau clip (dans un style différent et plus Triggerien ;-) pour le groupe et leur chanson Ebobo, qui s'inscrit donc dans le projet global "Glukoza Animation Studios" que j'avais déjà évoqué, et qui est sans aucun doute une série de clips avec une continuité, ce nouveau MV étant clairement un prequel du précédent.
