Le long métrage d'animation "The Little Prince and the Eight Headed Dragon" (Wanpaku ōji no orochi taiji) réalisé par Yugo Serikawa en 1963 chez Toei Animation est disponible gratuitement et légalement sur Youtube depuis aujourd'hui.
Il s'agit cependant du doublage anglais, et en version 4/3.
[edit 19/04] la vidéo a été géobloquée le lendemain de sa mise en ligne (elle ne l'était pas du tout auparavant), désormais uniquement dispo aux USA.
En attendant qu'un éditeur étranger fasse enfin la démarche de sortir le film en Blu-ray (au Japon ça fait déjà un moment qu'il est dispo), je vous rappelle que je propose les 2 trailers HD du film depuis 12 ans sur le Catsuka Theater & Catsuka Player.

Les deux fondations respectives des réalisateurs Seth MacFarlane et Martin Scorsese s'associent dans un projet visant à restaurer / remasteriser une collection personnelle de Scorsese composée de court métrages d'animation des années 1920 à 1940, contentant notamment des films courts des frères Fleischer et de George Pal.

Si vous habitez aux USA, le film Shin Ultraman réalisé par Shinji Higuchi avec l'aide de son poto Hideaki Anno est actuellement dispo gratuitement (et légalement) sur Youtube.

Quelques jolis mots de Guillermo del Toro au sujet d'Hayao Miyazaki dans l'édition spéciale du magazine américain Time consacré aux 100 personnalités les plus influentes de 2024 :
I discovered Hayao Miyazaki’s Toei Animation films as a child—films like "The Wonderful World of Puss ’n Boots" and series like "Heidi" and "Marco", in which his style and influence became increasingly identifiable. Encountering "My Neighbor Totoro" as an adult, my mind snapped back to those earlier works, and I recognized how much this man had shaped my childhood.
Miyazaki’s work provokes that rare emotion—the shiver of recognition of a type of beauty that is impossible in the real world and thus exists only in his films. Yet he is also a brutal realist regarding greed, war, and human rage. He knows that we shape and destroy the planet and that humans are the best and the worst of our world.
He is entirely genuine. A one-of-a-kind creator who exists fully in his art. He is the single most influential animation director in the history of the medium, and one of my top 10 favorite storytellers in any audiovisual medium. "The Boy and the Heron" is a subtle masterpiece that exerts a gravitational pull—and many of us feel that pull intensely.

Pour son 20e anniversaire, le film d'animation "Ghost In The Shell 2 : Innocence" de Mamoru Oshii (2004) se voit remasterisé en 4K, et revient dans les salles nord-américaines cet été via l'excellent distributeur GKIDS.
En espérant donc de futures nouvelles sorties Blu-ray / UHD plus tard, et à l'international.

Pour info, le Studio Ghibli recevra une Palme d'Or d'Honneur au prochain Festival de Cannes.
L'occasion de récompenser pour la première fois la carrière d'un studio d'animation dans son ensemble, et non des personnes spécifiques.
Un choix peu habituel qui peut peut-être aussi se lire comme une astuce du festival pour éviter de se prendre un vent si Hayao Miyazaki déclinait l'invitation pour se rendre sur place, comme a son habitude quelques soient les événements.

Ci-dessous un petit extrait de "Kumabachi Bee", court métrage réalisé en 2023 par Junji Kobayashi, et co-produit par Tezuka Prod.
Enseignant à l'école Laputa Art Animation School, Mr Kobayashi est un vétéran de l'animation, qui a notamment beaucoup travaillé avec Osamu Tezuka.
C'est d'ailleurs lui qui avait animé en solo le court métrage "Jumping", et ceux qui connaissent pourront ressentir un feeling similaire au regard de l'extrait de ce nouveau court où l'artiste s'est encore une fois laissé aller à une animation non-stop (150 secondes, 3000 dessins successifs, pas d'intervalles), et ici avec non pas la vue subjective d'un homme qui saute, mais d'un frelon qui vole.

Magnifique première grosse bande annonce pour Look Back, long métrage d'animation réalisé par Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers, Shishigari) au sein de son studio Durian.
Basé sur le manga de Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), le film est toujours prévu en salles au Japon le 28 juin.

Adapté du manga de Takashi Imashiro, produit par Shin-Ei Animation (Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan) et Miyu Productions, le film est réalisé par Nobuhiro Yamashita et Yoko Kuno.

Il y a souvent des annonces surprenantes dans la cinquantaine de communiqués de presse que je reçois chaque jour, et aujourd'hui c'est celle de "Beethoven Wars : Un combat pour la paix", une collaboration inattendue entre "manga et musique classique" à travers un spectacle qui se tiendra du 23 au 26 mai à la Seine Musicale (Paris).
Plus de 100 musiciens et chanteurs seront enrobés par un écran géant incurvé diffusant des séquences dites "motion manga" (en projection mapping 2D et 3D) illustrant un récit dystopique librement inspiré par des musiques de scène de Beethoven, également interprétées en live donc.
Un spectacle créé par Laurence Equilbey (direction musicale), Antonin Baudry (réalisation et mise en scène) et Sandrine Lanno (co-mise en scène), accompagnés à la co-réalisation d'Arthur Qwak (Chasseurs de Dragons) qui a chapeauté les séquences "manga" au studio Je Suis Bien Content.

Enfin une première bande annonce (et très stimulante) pour l'adaptation en série animée du manga T・P BON ("Time Patrol Bon, du regretté Fujiko F. Fujio, co-auteur de Doraemon) par Masahiro Ando (Sword of the Stranger) et le studio Bones.
Sortie le 2 Mai sur Netflix (Saison 1) puis le 17 juillet (Saison 2).
An ordinary high school student named Bon becomes part of a team of time-traveling agents tasked with saving people's lives during historical events that happen across different eras and locations around the globe.

Selon le très sérieux média Variety, le premier long métrage d'animation de Bong Joon Ho (dont je vous parle depuis 2021) serait un film d'animation dessiné à la main ("hand-drawn", je cite), donc en 2D.
Ce qui contredit les annonces précédentes, qui parlaient d'un film 3D.
Peut-être est-ce une boulette (rare) de Variety, en tous cas c'est pour moi l'occasion encore d'accompagner une information d'une nouvelle image de Bong bien choisie par mes soins, à savoir un autoportait de Bong ;-]

"Chinese Queer" est un projet animé chinois que je surveille depuis quelques temps, car il a pour particularité d'une part d'être réalisé par Weng Ming (aka Sam Weng, directeur artistique du très beau Deep Sea), et d'autre part d'être adapté de la BD du même nom du dessinateur Seven (publiée en France, ainsi qu'aux USA sous le titre "Queer in Asia"), dont l'histoire parle du milieu gay en Chine.
Un sujet qui comme vous vous en doutez n'est pas le plus facile à produire dans ce pays (voir une précédente news), et je leur souhaite la meilleure réussite possible (avis aux partenaires potentiels à l'international aussi, bien sûr).
Un pilote a d'ores et déjà été réalisé, et si aucun extrait vidéo n'existe encore sur le web occidental, je vous partage quand même un petit montage de GIFs que j'ai déniché au détour du web chinois.

On me souffle dans l'oreillette que le réalisateur japonais Rintaro (83 ans) vient de se lancer sur les réseaux sociaux, avec l'ouverture d'un compte Instagram officiel où il y raconte notamment son voyage récent en France dans le cadre de la sortie de son manga autobiographique.

Le studio américain Nathan Love (qui appartient à Aardman depuis quelques années) développe un projet de mini série nommé Mothership, qu'ils ont d'ores et déjà concrétisé sous la forme d'un court métrage (qui tourne en ce moment en festivals).
L'histoire semble être, je cite, un "ridiculous space odyssey" débutant au début de tout (c'est à dire le Big-Bang).
Un trailer assez mystérieux existe, et sur mes réseaux j'ai posté un remontage où j'ai juste ajouté quelques plans issus d'une vidéo making of.
A RIDICULOUS SPACE ODYSSEY FROM NATHAN LOVE
Mothership starts at the beginning of time itself - the Big Bang. This cosmic explosion not only created the universe as we know it, but also a set of celestial beings.
Our story follows one of these beings - The Starman. In early times these gods lived lives of creation and destruction, forming galaxies and planets between drunken nights and lost weekends. But Starman is banished and sent crashing onto a desolate planet with diminished powers and a foggy memory; exiled for eternity.
However, through a combination of his blood and the lava and water of this strange planet, life is created. It takes the form of creatures made from a meat-like substance. Lacking nervous or cerebral systems, these meat creatures are wonderfully amorphous, but also not the smartest things in the universe.
The Starman shapes and teaches these creatures, evolving them into human-esque forms. They worship him, he instructs them in the building of monuments and a civilization grows. With their help, The Starman is able to travel back to his galactic home. But was the creation he left behind a mistake?

L'équipe de Maliki, l'un des plus anciens webcomics français (porté depuis 20 ans par le scénariste et dessinateur Souillon), se lance dans l'aventure du jeu vidéo avec "Maliki : Poison of the past".
Le jeu sera édité par Ankama, et vous pouvez déjà le précommander via cette campagne (qui finit dans 21 jours) :

Si vous avez déjà traîné ou travaillé dans certains studios, peut-être avez-vous déjà entendu certains animateurs 2D parler d'animer "à 3", par exemple. Il s'agit souvent d'une référence au rythme d'une image toutes les 3 frames (8 images secondes), que l'on retrouve notamment sur énormément de prods japonaises.
Certains animateurs, notamment japonais, partagent de temps en temps des exemples d'animations similaires animées à différents rythmes, basées sur les mêmes key poses (dessins d'animation clés), et donc où le nombre de dessins d'intervalles à réaliser entre ces poses diffère selon chaque cadence choisie.
Ci-dessous un exemple par l'animateur Takeshi Inamura, où j'ai juste transcrit le nombre d'images différentes par rapport aux nombre de frames et secondes, et où il a donc animé le même plan d'anim (un cycle de marche, avec 4 poses clés initiales) à 3, 2, et 1 (1 étant donc de la full anim).
Sachant qu'au Japon cet art du rythme va plus loin, et est intrinsèquement lié à leur méthode, notamment dès les timesheets / feuilles d'expos des animateurs (peu/pas utilisées ailleurs dans le monde). Mais ce serait un peu long à expliquer. Et la "fluidité" visuelle d'une animation ne dépends pas forcément que du nombre de dessins, mais aussi de leur qualité (notamment des dessins clés), sans parler de certains animateurs qui arrivent à jongler de manière surprenante avec ces rythmes (voire les transcender).
En bonus, je vous invite également à regarder d'autres très jolis cycles de marche, toujours par Takeshi Inamura, mais beaucoup plus "libres" :-]
