L'animatrice et illustratrice Emmanuelle Walker signe un très beau court métrage nommé Le Jour où je me suis ramassée dans l'champ - ou OMW pour son titre anglais - qu'elle a réalisé chez WIZZ.
Un petit film très personnel qui prends place à Québec où elle a grandi, et où prennent aussi place quelques galères du quotidien.
Et j'en profite pour signaler que j'ai référencé le mois dernier sur Catsuka Shopping un joli livre jeunesse (avec des calques) qu'elle a illustré : Solidaires : L'entraide dans la nature.

This film is set in the beautiful province of Quebec where I grew up, so the original version had to be in French.
After years in the animation industry, I wanted to direct a film with no constraints. I wanted to write a story for myself. With a carte blanche and team of animators from Wizz, I seized the opportunity to write a short film. It is a film without concern of an audience, a film that I would want to watch. In reality, I never wrote a single word. This film was born from 'frames' that felt natural to illustrate and animate. It was a purely visual endeavor, a puzzle of scenes. The basic idea was simply to have a character go through a day akin to an obstacle course where troubles pile up, but at every 'pothole,' the character would get up and continue. This character, detached from each unpleasant moment, moves forward without hesitation. In hindsight, with my personal revelations and discussions with friends, I realised the subconscious symbols of my film. All of which stemmed from a storyboard-based and entirely automatic writing process. Naturally, I anticipated questions about the snake. Indeed, the image of the snake can evoke temptation and death. A snake is often associated with chaos, especially when it slithers along a woman's leg. However, as depicted in Renaissance works, it is also a symbol of rebirth and immortality. Thanks again to my team for their hard work, I’m grateful for the opportunity offered by my lovely rep Wizz.

Son prochain projet en date est "Castle Town", un fanfilm inspiré d'Ocarina of Time, dans un style ouvertement inspiré Ghibli.

L'école des Gobelins sort donc un nouveau court métrage de fin d'études chaque mercredi depuis le 4 octobre dernier, et si je ne les relaie pas tous systématiquement (je ferai une news combo à la fin), j'attire l'attention sur le film du jour, Sunscreen, réalisé par quatre artistes d'origine chinoise : Xinzhi Ma, Yuan Liu, Yufan Chen, et Zixiao Yue (issus des classes internationales de l'école).
Et quelque part, c'est donc une sorte de joli "french donghua" :-] (oui j'aime bien inventer des termes et des hashtags)

Le court métrage d'horreur argentin Carne de Dios (Flesh of God), dont je vous avais déjà parlé, est désormais en ligne avec sous titres anglais (même si le film est quasi muet).
Ce film de 20min, réalisé par Patricio Plaza, est la première production du studio argentin Ojo Raro - fondé par Plaza avec Paula Boffo et Gerva Canda - qui se veulent spécialisés dans l'animation pour adultes.
En ligne sur Youtube et Vimeo via Miyu qui a depuis récupéré la distribution.

COURT-MÉTRAGES
Andy Coyle, le réalisateur de la série Hilda, lançait il y a tout juste un an le channel Youtube Don't Walk Home Alone After Dark, de manière discrète (son nom n'est cité nulle part), avec un court métrage de 12 minutes nommé "The Pine Creepers", qu'il a entièrement réalisé - et doublé - seul (à l'exception de la musique).
Il revient aujourd'hui avec un 2e court métrage nommé The Worm, qui me plaît encore plus, et qu'il a encore une fois fait (presque) tout seul, à côté de son travail.
Un film de 15 minutes à l'animation limitée, mais à l'immersion illimitée.
Sachant que comme son nom l'indique, ce channel Youtube est dédié à des histoires d'horreur / qui font un peu peur :-]
[edit 26/10] suite aux critiques de quelques internautes envers le channel Youtube "Don't Walk Home Alone After Dark", qui ne mentionnait jusque là absolument aucun credit nulle part (ni même le nom d'Andy Coyle, donc), le channel a rajouté les credits des gens qui ont aidé (comme mon "presque tout seul" le suggérait) pour le 2e court métrage "The Worm" (il manque cependant toujours les credits d'Andy aux postes qu'il a occupé, à commencer par la réalisation, ce qui en fait donc toujours des credits incomplets). L'occasion aussi de vous pointer cet article/interview au sujet de la réalisaton quasi solo du premier court "The Pine Creepers".

Gorrionetas est un futur court métrage d'animation indé argentin que je surveille depuis un moment.
Porté par des artistes que j'apprécie, notamment Gastón Pacheco et Ezequiel Torres, ce projet est fait sur leur temps libre, en parallèle de leurs boulots (l'idée de cet univers étant né il y a déjà un moment, avec des dessins collectifs).
Aucune visibilité sur une date de sortie donc, mais en attendant je me régale des avancements visuels qu'ils postent de temps en temps sur Instagram, comme cette petite séquence de quelques secondes.

En parallèle de Hotel Kolkata, la 2e saison de la mini web série Yuki 7 (dont la diffusion devrait démarrer sous peu), le studio américain Chromosphere (de Kevin Dart) a réalisé un petit court métrage bonus nommé Yuki's Daydream, toujours en utilisant le moteur 3D Unreal 5, et en testant ici 7 styles/ambiances différents.

Depuis des années, le réalisateur Nikita Diakur s'essaie à des court métrages et autres expérimentations 3D très destructurants (cf mes précédentes news sur Fest et Ugly, par exemple).
Il vient de mettre en ligne Backflip, son dernier projet toujours très expérimental, où dans un film de 12 minutes il raconte comment il a essayé de faire apprendre le périlleux saut du "backflip" à son propre avatar 3D, créé rapidement à l'aide de quelques outils numériques, et entraîné par une intelligence artificielle ;-]
Le film est visible sur Vimeo et Youtube.
A fun film about a topic that scares me a lot.
In 2019, I gave backflipping a shot, but it didn't go well. Fear and a broken toe killed my confidence, and I gave up. To get past this, I made an avatar. The training of the avatar was based on the methods from the research paper "Deep Mimic," enabling it to learn to do backflips using machine learning, mimicking human moves, and learning from mistakes without the risk of getting hurt. This journey, full of wonder and discomfort due to A.I.’s potential, took three years to capture, resulting in the above documentary. The film delves into themes like ambition, facing fear, balancing control and uncertainty, aiming for excellence, grappling with the inevitability of technological advancements, accepting failure, and learning to let go.

L'artiste que j'avais envie de vous faire découvrir aujourd'hui est Yinan Liang, une jeune animatrice chinoise qui a fait ses études à l'Université Renmin (Pékin) puis à la School of Visual Arts (New York), avant de débuter sa carrière pro chez Buck, où elle est actuellement en alternance.
Elle vient de mettre en ligne un joli petit film d'1 minute nommé Pilipala, réalisé dans le cadre de ses études (et avec entre autres Sonnyé Lim en tutrice, pour celles et ceux qui verront comme moi une certaine filiation visuelle).
L'occasion donc de pointer aussi ses autres travaux persos, et notamment des petites boucles animées qu'elle poste sur son compte Instagram.

Le géant SVOD chinois Bilibili vient d'annoncer une saison 2 pour Capsules, anthologie de court métrages produits par des artistes/studios indépendants.
Trailer dispo ici (via le nouveau lineup 2023-2024 de Bilibili présenté en direct aujourd'hui).
A noter que 2 des courts de cette nouvelle saison étaient initialement prévus dans la saison 1, mais leur production avait accusé des retards (courage Nicolas).

COURT-MÉTRAGES
Pour fêter son 10e anniversaire, le studio anglais The Line - que je suis depuis leurs débuts - n'a pas lésiné sur les moyens (outre une grosse fête hier soir à Londres ;-) : ils viennent à l'instant de sortir un fabuleux petit court métrage nommé Heavenly Vessel, réalisé par Venla Linna.

Bande annonce pour Once Upon a Studio, un court métrage américain réalisé par Dan Abraham et Trent Correy, produit pour célébrer le 100e anniversaire de Disney.
Ce court a comme cahier des charges de mettre en scène tous les personnages de Disney (et ils ont plutôt bien réussi le challenge / j'ai vu le film en avant-première à Annecy).
Diffusion aux USA le 15 Octobre sur ABC (et peut-être aussi en salles avant Wish comme cela était prévu à la base, mais qui sait si ils arriveront à l'imposer aux réseaux de salles).
